Biodegradable and edible straws: the alternatives to plastic

-

Plastic pollution is an ongoing phenomenon that takes many forms on a daily basis. One of the most harmful and often underestimated is that of straws.

PLASTIC STRAWS

Sipping a drink or cocktail is certainly a moment of relaxation and pleasure, an idyllic moment in which the straw cannot be missed. Plastic straws, used primarily for hygienic reasons, are, however, often thrown away or forgotten, regardless of the immense environmental damage.

DISPOSABLE CULTURE

If we do a quick calculation of how long we use them (about twenty minutes) and how long it takes to dispose of them (a few hundred years), we understand that it will soon be a case of doing without them. Also and especially because single-use plastics are not recyclable.
Plastic straws are one of the greatest symbols of disposable culture.
In London alone, about 2 billion of them are used a year (!), so much so that theEvening Standard has launched a petition on Change.org calling on manufacturers to ban them or find eco-sustainable solutions by the end of 2018.
Since they are usually made of non-recyclable materials, they are likely to stay in landfills for decades. Giving up their use could pave the way for the abandonment of other disposable utensils and accessories. Of reasons not to use them there are many, we want to point out just a few.

5 REASONS NOT TO USE PLASTIC STRAWS ANYMORE

  1. More than 1 billion are consumed per day worldwide, 500 million in the United States alone (data: Plastic Pollution Coalition).
  2. They cannot be recycled.
  3. They end up on beaches and in the seas. In Europe, they are among the top 5 wastes collected on coasts (data: Plastic Pollution Coalition).
  4. They kill birds and marine animals.
  5. Without them, drinks do not change flavor.
