Changing habits: informal food

-

Every day more than 2.5 billion people eat on the street. Therefore, it is not just a fad: street food, eating on the street, is a real world phenomenon, a behavioral revolution of extraordinary proportions.Everyone is dealing with it: from leading international anthropologists to fashion magazines, from philosophers to chefs who are trying their hand at it and writing books on the subject. Some see this trend as a form of degradation of our way of life, an inelegant way of eating, an 'all-Asian or American habit that is embarrassing us, that will sink us into the decay of taste. Personally, I think there is a bit of short memory in this statement, because then maybe these same critics binge on finger food at some vernissage extolling its merits and do not remember that chefs were inspired by street food itself to create finger food. Moreover, food eaten on the street is certainly not a recent invention. Ancient Romans, Greeks Sumerians, and Egyptians who were certainly not culturally deprived populations, ate while walking, hawker stalls sold food and drinks, only the rich allowed themselves sit-down dinners. While certainly fast food has somewhat involuted the taste buds of our children and grandchildren, on the other hand the habit of tasting foods from other cultures, from other ethnic groups at low cost is widespread and can only help us to open ourselves to the new and different without preconceptions and prejudices. If today we Italians eat hamburgers, hot dogs and kebabs, the rest of the world eats slices of pizza and sandwiches, tramezzini and focaccia, piadine and panzarotti arancini and castagnacci, caldarroste and farinate on the street. No one has been able to invent and export poor, but tasty and sought-after street food more than the Italians.

So: long live street food ! Instead, the real aspect we need to think about is the enormity of waste, of garbage that we create every day by throwing away street food containers. Even just a few grams of packaging multiplied by two and a half billion people who consume street food every day, make a weight and volume of garbage with figures that cannot even be written down, and this for 365 days a year! Therefore, those in the trade, those who prepare street food and take-out food must pose the problem of the disposal of this waste. It is essential that all this kind of food is always served in eco-friendly, environmentally friendly, biodegradable containers: glasses and containers that once used and abandoned do not become a poison for all mankind. Today we can choose from an endless range of proposals, materials and shapes. Disposables have become beautiful to see and to touch.
