THE REGENERATED LEATHER

Regenerated leather was born out of the need to contain costs and limit the use of animal hides. The production of regenerated leather is incredibly similar in technique and mechanics to that of paper. Natural leather scraps are finely shredded and mixed with rubber, latex and other synthetic aggregants until they are pressed and processed into sheets of varying thicknesses depending on the intended use, in much the same way as paper is made. Before being finally made available to manufacturers of furniture, footwear or various objects, regenerated leather sheets may be subjected to various "finishing" processes whose purpose is to make them as similar as possible to the corresponding natural version such as calendering, buffing and varnishing.
